Universal Newborn Hearing Screening is a mandatory test to a check a baby’s hearing after birth, before leaving the hospital to identify hearing loss as early as possible in children.
What is Universal Newborn Hearing Screening? How important is it to detect hearing loss early on in children?

Universal Newborn Hearing Screening is a mandatory test to a check a baby’s hearing after birth, before leaving the hospital to identify hearing loss as early as possible in children.
- All babies should have their hearing tested before they leave the hospital.
- If a baby is born at home, a hearing test should be completed before he or she is 1 month old.
When a baby fails the screening tests, he or she is referred for more detailed, diagnostic hearing testing. The goal is to screen newborn babies before 1 month of age, diagnose hearing loss
before 3 months of age and start intervention before 6 months of age. may be
recommended and therapy/intervention services are initiated to help the baby learn
to listen and speak. After 3 months of rigorous therapy, an assessment will be carried out
to decide whether to continuing hearing aids or recommend a Cochlear implant.
