What is Universal Newborn Hearing Screening? How important is it to detect hearing loss early on in children?

Universal Newborn Hearing Screening is a mandatory test to a check a baby’s hearing after birth, before leaving the hospital to identify hearing loss as early as possible in children.

  • All babies should have their hearing tested before they leave the hospital.
  • If a baby is born at home, a hearing test should be completed before he or she is 1 month old.

When a baby fails the screening tests, he or she is referred for more detailed, diagnostic hearing testing. The goal is to screen newborn babies before 1 month of age, diagnose hearing loss
before 3 months of age and start intervention before 6 months of age. may be
recommended and therapy/intervention services are initiated to help the baby learn
to listen and speak. After 3 months of rigorous therapy, an assessment will be carried out
to decide whether to continuing hearing aids or recommend a Cochlear implant.

Why is Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Important?

Acquisition of spoken language is a time dependent process. For a child to develop speech, it is necessary for him/her to have some form of auditory input from a very early age.

It is important to identify hearing loss as early as possible because babies start learning how to use sound as soon as they are born. Listening in the first months of life prepares babies to speak. These early steps are building blocks for communication.

  • Babies start by babbling, using many of the sounds they hear spoken around them.
  • By their first birthday, babies are already learning what words mean and may be saying a few words.

Babies learn to talk by listening to their families talk around them. Imagine that a baby has a hearing loss, but no one knows about it. This can lead to slow development of speech and language, leading to problems in school later in life.

Hospitals regularly screen newborn babies for a number of conditions, such as genetic disorders. Hearing loss is more common than any other problems or conditions that are screened for at birth. About four babies out of every 1,000 will be born with a permanent hearing loss.

My child is not responding to sound. What are my options?

The options will depend on the type, degree & cause of hearing loss. Kindly speak to our doctors for further information.

What are the tests necessary for Cochlear implantation?

A hearing aid evaluation. CT or MRI scans to check the inner ear and hearing nerve (these tests will tell your doctor if your cochlea has a normal shape) A physical exam. A psychological evaluation is
recommended as part of the protocol to be able to judge the prognosis post implantation
and readiness in terms of surgery and post-surgical Re/Habilitation process .

Every child is different & may need some special tests to enable them to hear. Please speak to our doctors for more information
